China's generative AI base passes 700 million users: AI search is mainstream, not a niche
By mid-2026, generative AI reached more than 700 million users in China with penetration above 50% — customers are asking AI which option is best.
Key numbers
- CNNIC's Generative AI Application Development Report (2026): by the first half of 2026, China's generative AI user base passed 700 million people, with penetration above 50%.
- Supporting capacity: as of June 2026, intelligent computing capacity reached 2,185 EFLOPS, up 177% year on year, with the first fully domestic 100,000-card AI supercluster in operation.
- More than 120,000 high-quality datasets have been built.
Method and sample
Report released by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) at the 2026 China Internet Infrastructure Resources Conference and reported by Xinhua; user figures cover the first half of 2026, capacity figures are as of June 2026.
What it means for brands
Passing half the population means the Chinese market is past the trial phase: when customers ask AI which option is best, whether your brand is in that answer decides business. And Chinese engines read very different sources from international ones, so they have to be handled separately.
How SourceSight handles it
SourceSight covers five Chinese engines (DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen, Zhipu GLM, Doubao) and five international engines; Chinese projects ask in Chinese and get a Chinese-market off-site list.
Limits
The report counts generative AI users generally, not AI search usage specifically; macro figures cannot be converted into query volumes for any single industry.
