Candidates already use AI to research employers: 80% do, and how AI describes you affects hiring
Recruiting is now AI on both sides: candidates use AI to search, employers use AI to screen — and what candidates read about a company increasingly comes from AI.
Key numbers
- Survey: 590 US job seekers; 80% use AI tools during their search and 86% say AI helped them submit more applications each week.
- AI on both sides: 77% believe the companies they applied to used AI to screen applications, and 80% are fine with it.
- Candidate behaviour: 94% tailor their resume for each application and 80% changed how they write resumes because of AI screening tools; 93% worry AI-generated applications make it harder for qualified candidates to stand out.
- Mixed feelings: 61% say AI made finding a job easier than three years ago, while 92% worry it will reduce jobs in their field within five years; 45% searched for two to three months and 68% applied to at least ten roles before landing one.
Method and sample
Clutch survey released 2026-07-21 (press release) of 590 US job seekers, measuring AI usage, behaviour change and attitudes across the job search. It is self-reported survey data rather than platform behaviour logs.
What it means for brands
Recruiting gained another layer: candidates ask AI what a company is like, what it pays and whether it is worth applying to. How AI describes an employer — size, business, reputation, open roles — shapes whose applications arrive, while the candidates themselves are also being summarised by machines.
How SourceSight handles it
Employer-brand projects can be built like any other market: prompts come from candidate questions (what is this company like, is it growing, what does it pay, how hard is the interview), mentions and position are reported per engine, and the off-site list prioritises job platforms and employer review sites.
Limits
The sample covers 590 US job seekers and is self-reported, so it does not generalise to every market; the survey measures candidate behaviour and attitudes, not an employer's actual visibility in AI.
