AI is the new front door to news: weekly chatbot news use rose from 7% to 10%

Social media and video overtook news websites as the main source of online news for the first time — with AI chatbots the fastest-growing new entry point.

Key numbers

  • Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026 (48 markets): weekly use of AI chatbots for news rose from 7% to 10%, reaching 16% among under-35s.
  • A structural crossover in online news: social media and video networks together reached 54%, overtaking news organisations' own websites and apps at 51%; adding AI chatbots, third-party sources reach 56%.
  • 30% now name social media and video as their main news source (up from 22% five years ago), and the share relying only on those sources rose to 12% (from 6% in 2020).
  • Overall trust in news fell to 37%, the lowest since measurement began in 2015, and just 25% in the United States; the most valued chatbot feature is the ability to ask follow-up questions (42%).
  • Growth is uneven: South Korea reached 14% and Greece 12%, while the US, UK, France and Germany saw no increase.

Method and sample

Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (University of Oxford), Digital News Report 2026: an annual survey across 48 markets. These figures come from the report's executive summary, covering AI chatbot use for news, source mix and trust.

What it means for brands

News is the leading indicator: people increasingly take the answer in a chat window instead of clicking through. Brands and publishers will be summarised by AI more and more, which makes “is the summary accurate” more important than “what rank do we hold”.

How SourceSight handles it

SourceSight records how AI answers describe your brand, not just whether links appear, and separates mentions from citations so visibility is not reduced to traffic.

Limits

Survey data is self-reported across online populations in 48 markets; AI chatbot news use is still only 10%, so the direction of travel matters more than the absolute figure.
