Web search and AI answers differ less in format than in who they read
For the same queries, Google results and generative AI answers diverge systematically in source domains, source types, query intent and freshness.
Key numbers
- Scale: a large-scale empirical study comparing results returned by Google Search against answers from leading generative AI services.
- Four dimensions of divergence: the source domains consulted, the typology of those domains (earned media versus owned versus social), query intent, and the freshness of the information.
- Mechanism: the paper analyses how LLM pre-training knowledge interacts with real-time web search when it is enabled — the two information ecosystems do not work the same way.
- For practitioners this points at the difference between Answer Engine Optimization and SEO: assumptions from the SEO playbook do not carry over to AI answers.
Method and sample
arXiv paper “Navigating the Shift: A Comparative Analysis of Web Search and Generative AI Response Generation” (2026-01-23): the same queries compared across Google Search and leading generative AI services on source domains, source typology, query intent and freshness, plus analysis of how pre-training knowledge interacts with live retrieval.
What it means for brands
An AI answer is not another search ranking: it reads different sources, with different preferences and different recency logic. Measuring AI performance therefore has to use AI's own surfaces rather than keyword rank as a proxy.
How SourceSight handles it
SourceSight asks engines directly from a prompt set instead of reading traditional rankings, reports mentions, position and cited sources per engine, and builds the off-site list around the structural preference for third-party sources.
Limits
The public abstract reports directional findings without per-dimension figures, and generative services change quickly, so the size of the divergence shifts over time.
